Think about how uncomfortable it would be to live in a house where all the furniture is twice your size.

You'd struggle to climb on the couch, you wouldn't be able to see what was on the countertops, and you couldn't reach most things in the fridge.

It would certainly be frustrating.

This is a child's daily experience. Almost nothing in their space is the right size and they just have to... deal with it.

It makes sense, we can't outfit our homes in tiny furniture - BUT - it doesn't change the fact that this element of childhood can be frustrating.

To ease some of that frustration, you can include child-sized furniture and tools whenever possible.

Dr. Montessori designed Montessori classrooms to include almost exclusively child-sized materials. This is because she found that children, even very young ones, have a natural desire to be independent.

Fostering this independence allows children to better concentrate, develop confidence, and learn more easily.

The Benefits of Giving Your Child a Table and Chair Set

One of the simplest ways to bring Montessori into your home is by adding a small table and chair to your child’s play space and/or eating area.

This gives them to option of sitting at a table to play, do their activities, and eat.

This helps in a few ways:

1. It Creates Order

As we’ve discussed before, young children have a strong sense of order and a small table creates a designated workspace for them. Everything they need for an activity can be kept within reach on the table, and this is why it helps them to develop their concentration. They can stay with their activities for longer periods of time because they have everything they need in front of them.

2. Creates Separation Between Children

The addition of a small table and chair to a play space can be helpful for siblings who share the space, allowing them to have their own areas to play and not feel like they’re on top of one another.

3. Eating Is More Comfortable and Independent

Including a table and chair in their eating area gives them a child-sized space to eat and use all the furniture independently.

Eating together as a family has an endless list of benefits but giving children the opportunity to eat their snacks or one meal a day at a table their size will help to develop their independence around eating.

With a child-size table they can:

  • set the table themselves
  • get up and grab a cloth if they spill something
  • simply function with more ease because they aren’t struggling with furniture that’s too big for them.
