Summer is the perfect time to slow down and look for insects and birds that live in your neighbourhood.

Young children are in a sensitive period for small objects (typically occurs between the ages of 1 and 4), where they have a strong attention to detail and are drawn to small objects.

You may have observed this when your child stops to watch ants going in and out of an ant hill or picks up a tiny rock on the beach.

These printables are a great addition to summer walks.

Click the links below to download them:

Print them out and see what you can find! It’s okay if you don’t find them all in one outing, you’ve got all summer.

Extensions for the Bird Scavenger Hunt

For the bird printable, bring along a pair of children's binoculars to get a closer look.

There’s also a great app, Merlin Bird ID, that tells you what birds are around based on the songs you’re hearing. My kids have been LOVING the Merlin app this spring.

Extensions for the Insect Scavenger Hunt

For the insect printable, bring along a magnifying glass to see the finer details of the insects you discover.
