Play dough is one of my favourite activities for developing hand strength.

Strong hands and good fine motor skills are what allow young children to develop independence - dressing, feeding, self-care, etc and ultimately confidence, as they're able to do these things for themselves.

So if you're looking for a new way to interest your child in play dough, these printable play dough mats are great.

Just download the PDF of winter-themed images and then decorate them with play dough.

Instructions:

  1. Print the play dough mats and laminate (optional, but it helps them last longer).
  2. Show the child how to roll the play dough into strips to trace the snowflake designs or shape pieces to decorate the tree, snowman, and toque.
  3. Invite them to explore the mats however they like, copying the patterns, adding
details, or creating their own designs.

Tips:

  • Offer different colours of play dough and small loose parts (like buttons, beads, or pom poms) for extra decoration if your child is ready for more of a challenge. Ensure small items are being used safely at all times, as they can be a choking hazard.
  • These mats can also be used as colouring sheets if your child prefers markers, crayons, or pencil crayons.
