For most children, learning to read is something that takes years, lots of practice, and plenty of patience.

Because of this, it's best to make learning to read as fun and low pressure as possible at home. The last thing we want is for our children to hate reading!

The Label Game

One of the most popular and well-loved Casa classroom (ages 3-6) reading activities is called The Label Game.

It's so simple that you can easily do it at home.

The children are provided with a pile of thin strips of paper. They write the names of items around the classroom and then use those pieces of paper to label the objects.

That's it!

If your child is still having a lot of difficulty with their spelling and hand writing, we've added in a step to make the activity even easier.

We've made labels for common objects around the home that you can print. Then you can read them together and place them on the objects around the room.

Note: you can simply place them on or next to the object, or stick them on with tape, inviting your child to revisit and read the labels whenever they want.

Once your child becomes more comfortable with writing, they can make their own labels - the blank template is included.

Go here to download the labels.

If your child is not interested or finding this activity too difficult, they may simply not be ready for it yet and that’s okay!

You could also try to pique their interest in the activity by relating it to objects they really enjoy - toy cars (could label the colour), stuffed animals (could write name tags), or any other collection of items they love.
