Practicing sight words is a great way to quickly improve early reading fluency.
These are words that appear frequently in reading but they don't follow regular phonics rules.
For example:
Because these words aren't pronounced as a child would expect, it's helpful to memorize them.
In school, children often learn them with lots of repetition.
You can support this at home with fun sight words games, like the ones below:
All you need is some pavement and sidewalk chalk.
Draw a hopscotch and write sight words in each box rather than numbers. Invite your child to say each sight word as they jump on it. This one is great for learning because it incorporates movement into the activity.
Hide sight word cards around a room. As your child finds each word, they bring it to you and read it aloud.
You can give clues like "There is one beside something red!" to combine vocabulary, like prepositions, and movement.

You can do this inside or outside. Print the scavenger hunt and look for all the different sight words. Indoors you can look in books, food wrappers/labels, or anything that has words on it.
Outside you can look for sight words around your neighbourhood. There’s print everywhere if you look for it!

Remember that these activities are meant to be fun. If your child is not interested or finding the activities difficult, they may simply not be ready for these types of activities yet and that’s okay! I would introduce them once you know your child is learning similar concepts at school.
