Please note the mirror is real glass and the pitcher is real porcelain. Montessori does use real glass, with an emphasis that items are only handed off to the children after a demonstration and use of glass is monitored to ensure it's being handled carefully.
We also cannot accept returns for any of these items for hygienic reasons.

"A very pleasant experience ordering from The Montessori Room. Despite the pandemic and the hectic Christmas rush, the staff made my online purchase personal - from following up directly after the order was placed, to providing information about shipping and the great quality of the toy, I couldn’t have asked for a better service. The special note on the package made it feel like I actually bought it in person. Thank you!"

Young children are naturally drawn to the activities that the adults around them regularly do.
They also have a strong desire to do things independently and take care of themselves.
Giving children the option to participate in practical life activities, like self care, will:
Fosters independence
Develops practical life skills
Gives children a sense of satisfaction and builds confidence
Helps children become more aware of their physical and emotional needs
Prepares children for the future
Creates routine
Gives children more bodily autonomy; telling them we understand they're in charge of their bodies and what happens to it.
How to set up a Self Care Station In your Home
At home, a self care station can be set up by placing a low table in the bathroom or in the bedroom, depending on space limitations.
There are basic items that should be included in a self care station. These items are essential for self care; they include - a toothbrush, a hairbrush, a mirror, a washcloth, soap and water.
The main thing to focus on when setting up a self care station is accessibility. You want your little one to be able to access all of these items independently and with ease so they can be successful completing self care tasks without much help.
We also have a small Montessori Wash Station, available here: https://themontessoriroom.com/products/montessori-toddler-wash-station-kitchen-station
Why real glass?
In a Montessori classroom, children are given real materials, such as glass and porcelain, as early as 18 months old.
There’s a couple reasons for doing this.
It teaches consequences and care. When a plastic cup or plate is dropped repeatedly and never breaks, children don’t understand the care that needs to be taken with real materials such as glass and porcelain. It barely makes a sound when it hits the floor! This is a very practical way to teach children to care for their possessions and others.
It also shows our children that we trust them and their capabilities. This helps build their confidence and independence.
Child-Sized Materials Are Important
You wouldn't chop a carrot with a machete! That's what it can feel like to a toddler using adult-sized materials.
Child-sized materials are not only easier for them to use but they'll give your child the understanding that there's a place for them in the home - "These are my tools".
Yes, all of these items can be purchased on their own.
Katie Lannaman, an Infant Toddler Montessori (MACTE) teacher, RECE, and all-around amazing educator has assembled this Self Care Set, as well as the write-up that goes along with each item.
We've included a short write-up for each item, including the benefits for each item and instructions for how to introduce them.
