Montessori Floor Bed
The Benefits of a Montessori Floor Bed
The Montessori floor bed offers several benefits for children's development:
Independence: A floor bed allows children to get in and out of bed on their own, promoting independence and self-reliance. It empowers them to make choices about when to rest or play.
Builds confidence: Rather than waiting for a parent to retrieve them from a crib, the child learns to occupy themselves when they wake up in the morning. The child learns "I'm okay on my own."
Freedom of movement: Unlike a crib with high rails, a floor bed enables a child to move freely in and out of bed. This can encourage physical development.
Attachment and bonding: Parents can lie with the child and offer comfort, if needed, when falling asleep.
Healthy sleep patterns: Some parents find that their children sleep more soundly on a floor bed. The freedom to move around can help children develop a natural sleep routine, promoting better sleep patterns.
Smooth transition to a regular bed: Transitioning from a floor bed to a regular bed is often easier for children, as they are already accustomed to being in a more open sleep environment without the need for crib bars.
A Bed The Grows With Your Child
This is more than just a Montessori Floor Bed.
When your child is ready, you can flip the bed over and it becomes a platform bed with room for storage underneath.
With a few changes to the assembly, you now have a bed that grows with your child.
The hardware-less assembly means it's easy to reconfigure without damaging the bed.
And when your child is ready to move to a bigger bed, it's very simple to take apart and store for another child or resell.

I feel like the research part has been done for me by the wonderful team at the Montessori Room and all I have to do is pick and I can't go wrong! Not only that, the website is so well organized and easy to navigate, the follow-up emails confirm order, address and delivery and the items arrived in one day in perfect condition. While there are other floor beds on the market, we love this floor bed because it's designed to last. Made from high-quality, Canadian-milled hardwood plywood, this bed will last well beyond when your child grows out of it.
And the wipeable, non-toxic finish, means that it will look great too!
We especially love that:
The bed can be used as a low, floor bed or higher, platform bed. The frame just needs a few simple adjustments and it can be flipped over to be used in the low or high position.
It's made in Canada using Canadian-milled, formaldehyde-free glue. It's also finished with a smooth, non-toxic finish.
The assembly is done with no hardware and can be completed in just 10 minutes. It's all
It reduces the risk of climbing-related injuries and aligns with Montessori's child-centric educational philosophy.
There are no bars on this bed frame, eliminating potential entrapment hazards.
Yes but parents must ensure that the child's bedroom is entirely safe. With a floor bed, it's as if the whole bedroom becomes the crib.
Because we've eliminated any physical barriers to the child getting out of bed, the bedroom must be safe for them to explore independently. All furniture in the room must be securely fastened to the wall, all cords removed, all outlets covered, and any toys available must be safe to be explored with all of the senses, add a baby gate to the door, and use a baby monitor.
Please note that this is a bed for children 15 months+ and designed to meet ASTM standards for children's beds.
To prevent an entrapment hazard, the bed must be placed at least 30cm (12") from the wall.
This will depend on the child. Some families have found it helpful to start using the floor bed only for naps and gradually transition to overnight sleep over the course of a few months.
The floor bed fits a standard twin mattress - 38" x 75"
Please note the maximum mattress thickness must not be greater than 15cm (6"). Before use, ensure the mattress fits snugly within the bed frame so that it cannot be moved around. There must not be more than a 3cm gap between the mattress and the bed frame.
A floor bed keeps the mattress off of the floor. Placing a mattress directly onto the floor may result in growth of mildew or mold, especially in warm or humid environments.
Assembly can be done in as little as 20 minutes with absolutely no tools, although a rubber mallet may help to get the end pieces into place. To make the process easier, we have included written instructions and walkthrough videos.
