Best Developmental Toys for Toddlers (12 Months to 3 Years)

There is so much development that occurs during the toddler years.  Between the ages of 12 months and 3 years, children typically learn to walk, talk, work to strengthen their fine motor skills and become more interested in independence. 

When choosing toys for a toddler-aged child, look for ones that you think will be of interest to them.  Spend some time observing them to see how they choose to spend their time.  

• Do they like to work with their hands?  If so, activities that develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination may be what you're looking for.
• Do they like to explore the world with all of their senses?  If so, look for toys that invite them to touch, manipulate, listen, hear, etc. 
• Are they spending a lot of time developing their gross motor skills, i.e. walking, running, climbing, jumping, etc.?   If so, toys like balls, walkers, and ride-on toys may be of interest.  
• Are they showing an interest in independent play?  If so, look for toys that they can work with independently, like puzzles, shape sorters, or blocks.  Avoid toys that are too challenging and will require a lot of adult assistance.
