How To Teach Children About The Human Body

Young children are naturally interested in learning about themselves and how their bodies work.

They notice their hands, feet, faces and movements from a very young age.

So introducing the names of body parts, organs, and bones helps children build vocabulary while developing a deeper understanding of themselves.

Learning about the human body is also a wonderful way to encourage observation and self-awareness. Children begin to notice similarities and differences between parts of the body and understand how different parts work together.

How To Teach The Human Body

We've made three sets of Nomenclature Cards:

• Parts of a Human Body
• Human Organs
• Human Skeleton

Each set will help children move from the concrete to the abstract by connecting a real object with its picture and name.

Language cards help children:

• learn the names of parts of the human body
• enrich their vocabulary through meaningful, personal experiences
• strengthen their understanding that images represent real things in the world
• develop a greater awareness of themselves and how their bodies work

As an extension, use the Parts of a Human Body cards in front of a mirror. Invite your child to identify the different parts of their own body as they see them represented on the cards.
