Shelf work materials are hands-on educational toys and activities selected for Montessori Infant-Toddler and Casa/Primary prepared environments. While they are not traditional Montessori materials, they offer thoughtful extensions to skills children are developing in the classroom. They support repetition, independence, and purposeful hands-on learning.

We use the term “shelf work” because these toys and activities meet the criteria to be placed on the shelves in a Montessori prepared environment. They can be used to enrich the classroom by offering children additional opportunities to practise familiar skills in a slightly different context.
Shelf work is useful for shelf rotation, reinforcing concepts, or supporting children who benefit from extra repetition. Repetition helps children build confidence, persistence, and eventually mastery.
